Student competes at Scripps National Spelling Bee

Micah Sterling

General Brown student Micah Sterling returned to class this week at Brownville-Glen Park Elementary School, after making the trip to National Harbor, Maryland, to compete with some of the best spellers in the world.

The fourth-grader won a regional contest on March 3 at General Brown Junior-Senior High School, which landed him a spot at the national level.

Micah, who was speller 193, made it to the third round of the national competition on Tuesday, May 31.

Micah’s father told his teacher that he had a great time at the competition, was proud of the outcome and would like to go back every year.

“Our entire class has been excited to follow Micah on this journey,” said Mary Paige, who is Micah’s teacher. “His classmates put together a ‘good luck’ basket for him before he left, and we had a little sendoff party for him.”
